Díaz-Balart’s life was a testament to service and an enduring faith in the promise of the United States. Born in Havana, Cuba, into a prominent political family, he was forced to flee with his parents following the Cuban Revolution. The United States became his home, and in return, he dedicated his career to strengthening the fabric of the country that had embraced him. His leadership in Congress spanned nearly two decades, during which he became a respected voice on critical issues ranging from workforce development to immigration policy, always seeking common ground in pursuit of national progress.

“Lincoln Díaz-Balart exemplified the courage and integrity of true leadership,” added Salazar. “His work ensured that America remained a shining example of opportunity—not just in words, but in action. He understood that a strong workforce was essential to the nation’s success, and he fought tirelessly to ensure that every individual had the chance to contribute to the country’s economic growth.”

His service in the Florida State Legislature paved the way for his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992, where he represented South Florida’s 21st District for 18 years. Throughout his tenure, Díaz-Balart strongly advocated for policies that empowered working families and expanded opportunities for economic self-sufficiency. He was instrumental in supporting initiatives that strengthened workforce training programs, ensuring that individuals—particularly those from underserved communities—had the skills needed to compete in an evolving economy.

Salazar concludes, “DĂ­az-Balart’s passing marks the loss of a remarkable leader whose vision and contributions will continue to inspire future generations. As the nation reflects on his legacy, ¶¶Ňő´«Ă˝ encourages all Americans to honor his memory by embracing the values he championed—a commitment to workforce opportunity, economic empowerment, and the belief that by working together, we can build a stronger future for all.”

“Women in the workforce are more than contributors—they are architects of progress, building our nation’s economic foundation through their knowledge, skills, and leadership,” said Ignacio Salazar, President and CEO of ¶¶Ňő´«Ă˝. “From assembly lines to executive boardrooms, women are advancing industries, strengthening economies, and setting new standards of excellence.”

The SER Network of Affiliates recognizes that women have long been a driving force behind America’s prosperity, and their role in the workforce continues to expand; over 55% of the SER affiliates have a woman as leader. They are decision-makers, entrepreneurs, contributors, and bring unique skills and expertise that fuel productivity and strengthen the U.S. economy.

Latina, Indigenous women, and other women of color have been at the forefront of economic and social progress, demonstrating resilience, creativity, and leadership in workplaces nationwide. Despite facing systemic barriers and pay disparities, they continue to elevate industries, drive innovation, and inspire new generations of professionals.

Women of color represent nearly 20% of the U.S. workforce, yet they remain underrepresented in leadership positions. Latina women, for example, are among the fastest-growing demographic in entrepreneurship, owning nearly 2.5 million businesses in the U.S. generating significant economic contributions while creating jobs and opportunities (U.S. Census Bureau). Their ability to adapt, lead, and innovate continues to shape the future of business and community development.

“Our nation’s workforce is at its strongest when it reflects the diversity, talents, and aspirations of all Americans,” said Salazar. “We must commit to ensuring that women—especially Latinas, Indigenous women, and women of color—are empowered to advance, lead, and shape the future of every industry. Their perspectives are essential, their expertise is indispensable, and their contributions are transformative.”

A recent survey revealed that 94% of employees would remain with their current employer if it invested in their long-term learning and development. Companies that have invested in employee development have seen a 58% increase in retention rates. This data underscores the importance of equipping individuals with the right skills to thrive in a competitive job market. By providing structured training, career pathways, and ongoing education, SER and its affiliates ensure that workers are employable and capable of excelling and advancing in their careers.

In keeping with the 2025 Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” ¶¶Ňő´«Ă˝ reaffirms its dedication to advancing economic opportunity, celebrating diversity, and fostering collaboration that honors the contributions of every individual.

Black Americans play an essential role in the U.S. economy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Black workers accounted for 13.1% of the total labor force in 2024, contributing across industries from healthcare and technology to arts and education. Moreover, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black-owned businesses generate more than $200 billion in annual revenue, underscoring their critical role in driving economic growth and innovation.

The SER Network of Affiliates operates nationwide to deliver training programs, career services, and job placement initiatives that promote upward mobility for all Americans. These programs embody the ideals of Black History Month by fostering collaboration in labor in communities across the United States.

In observance of Black History Month, ¶¶Ňő´«Ă˝ encourages every individual to take time to learn, engage, and act. This can include supporting Black-owned businesses, mentoring young professionals, or participating in community events that amplify Black voices. By doing so, we strengthen the ideals of equality and unity that define our nation’s future.

The theme for this year, “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365,” serves as both a call to action and a guidepost for our work in 2025. Inspired by Dr. King’s principles of nonviolence, we are committed to addressing systemic inequities and building what he envisioned as the “Beloved Community,” a society where opportunity is abundant, and justice prevails.

Our progress as a society is significant, yet the journey toward fulfilling Dr. King’s dream remains ongoing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the representation of Black Americans in management-level positions has risen to 9.1%, a notable improvement from 7.6% in 2010. However, gaps persist, particularly in STEM fields, where Black and Latino workers collectively make up just 16% of the workforce despite accounting for nearly 30% of the U.S. population (Pew Research Center, 2023). These disparities remind us of the work that is still ahead to create genuinely inclusive opportunities for all.

¶¶Ňő´«Ă˝ recognizes that achieving such a vision requires actionable steps. Across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, our affiliates equip underserved workers with training, certifications, and resources. We empower individuals daily to overcome barriers and thrive in today’s competitive workforce. Moreover, fostering inclusivity within organizations—from adopting skills-based hiring practices to providing advancement opportunities—is essential to building a workforce that reflects the rich diversity of our nation.

“As we honor Dr. King’s legacy, let us remember that progress is not inevitable but is achieved through the concerted efforts of individuals, communities, and organizations working together,” says Salazar. “By uniting our strengths and remaining committed to equity and opportunity, we can fulfill his vision of an America where justice and dignity are within reach for all,” he says.
